Route 4 is one of the most impressive-and demanding-hiking trails on Skopelos. Featuring several steep climbs and significant elevation gain, it is best suited to hikers with a good level of fitness who wish to explore the mountainous landscapes of mount Palouki.
The first section of the route follows a smooth forest track, winding through fragrant pine woodland to the area of Strongyli. Along the way, hikers have the opportunity to visit two of mount Palouki's oldest and most beautiful monasteries: the Monastery of Aghia Varvara and the Monastery of Prodromos, both renowned for their peaceful atmosphere and historic significance.
Beyond Strongyli, the route continues along a well-marked footpath through dense forests of evergreen oaks and pine trees. After passing Vai peak, the trail descends through strawberry tree woodland, where magnificent views open towards the island of Alonissos and, on exceptionally clear days, as far as Skyros.
At the chapel of Agia Anna and the historic Monastery of Taxiarches, hikers can refill their water bottles from traditional stone springs that provide cool drinking water throughout the year. These peaceful locations offer ideal places to rest before continuing the ascent.
The final section, from the Monastery of Taxiarches to the summit of mount Palouki, is a steep uphill trail that challenges even experienced hikers. Every step, however, is rewarded with increasingly spectacular views across Skopelos, the surrounding islands, and the endless blue waters of the Aegean Sea.
