Hiking safely on Skopelos

Skopelos is mostly mountainous with steep terrain and limited water sources on the trail. A little preparation goes a long way — please read the guidelines before setting out.

Carry at least 1.5 L of water per person on shorter trails, 2 L+ on the long routes. Refill points are rare outside the villages.

Wear hiking boots with ankle support. Many sections are loose stone or polished kalderimi that becomes slippery after rain.

Start early. Summer temperatures on inland trails can exceed 38 °C by midday; aim to be off the ridge by 11:00.

Tell someone your route and expected return time. Mobile coverage on the ridge crossings (routes 6, 8, 9, 12) is patchy.

Stay on the waymarked path. Off-trail terrain is often overgrown maquis with limited visibility and snake habitat.

In an emergency call 112. Give the route number and the nearest waymark you can see.

About the network

The Skopelos Trails network is the result of a long-running collaboration between the Municipality of Skopelos, local trail makers, and Terrain editions, with support from the European Union.

Over the past decade more than 100 km of trail has been cleared, re-marked and signposted by a small team of volunteers and contractors, restoring the network of paths that once connected every monastery, harbour and shepherd's village on the island.

Each route has been mapped, photographed and described, and the work is published as printed maps, on-trail interpretive panels and now this website.

If you spot a missing waymark, fallen tree or other issue on the trail, please get in touch using the contact details below — your reports help keep the network walkable.
